Here in California, we are 49th in the nation in overall academic testing. We have turned our children’s future over to lobbyists and bureaucrats who pursue special interests rather than serving our children’s interests. It is time for government to allow citizens to actively pursue and create opportunity for all Americans to have access to quality education. Americans are smart enough to choose the best solutions for their families without government interference.

Education should start first with parents and their local community. Centralized top down government mandates or directives do not serve the best interests of our children. The federal government has no authority to fund or control our schools. I want to abolish the ineffective and wasteful Department of Education and return its functions directly to the states. By removing federal subsidies that inflate costs, schools will be funded only by local taxes, and parents and teachers can directly decide how best to allocate their resources. The Department of Education has failed to raise educational standards and now is the time to abolish it and return wasted tax dollars back to you, the hard working taxpayers of America.

Regarding the rising costs of higher education, I believe we should introduce legislation to help families cope with this out-of-control expense. I would support legislation offering full tax deductions for undergraduate college tuition, reasonable living expenses, and interest on student loans.
Parents around the nation have already shown their desire to be free of federal control by either enrolling their children in private schools, charter schools, or home school. Students enrolled in these alternatives have consistently performed better and tested higher than those in state-run schools.

Years of government run education have produced nothing but failure and frustrated students and parents. We can resurrect our public school system if we end the federal education monopoly and return monies back to you the parents and your local communities. Preparing our youth for tomorrow‚challenges benefits us all.
